Mental Checkups - Theodora Stolz

“80% of people have mental issues.  They would get better if all people would get a psychological physical, just like a medical one, yearly,” asserts Dr. Theodora Stolz.  Dr. Stolz feels strongly that a mental check is as important as a physical one, perhaps more so.  Physical issues can be, and sometimes are, connected closely with emotional and mental issues, a kind of psychosomatic, or stress related, connection.  Some doctors and researchers call this the mind/body connection.  Dr. Stolz feels illness could be detected more quickly, and resolved more successfully, through thorough checkups for mental and emotional stress which could be causing chronic pain, fatigue, headaches, and even more serious and debilitating physical issues.    Some experts believe traumatic events can trigger chronic physical problems.

A physical trauma response, such as a reaction to PTSD, could manifest as numbing, hyperarousal, hypervigilance, nightmares, flashbacks, and helplessness.  A sustained hyperresponse originating from stress and PTSD can result in the release of stress hormones, increasing blood pressure and blood sugar.  The body’s ability to heal itself becomes severely compromised.

A pain management option for stress and chronic pain relief would be a combination of psychotherapy and physical therapy.  Lymphatic massage and compression wraps would help alleviate the physical pain aspect, as one focuses on body alignment and posture, which may be a source of inflammation from the prolonged effects of tense muscles under stress.

Dr Theodora Stolz belief that regular psychic checkups can resolve mental issues before they become far more serious, deserves consideration.

Professional Contributions to Forensic Evaluation - Dr. Theodora Stolz

Dr. Theodora Stolz has emphasized throughout her daily life, and her professional life, her overwhelming desire to help others.  This desire was formed early in her life, through her observations and experiences among the working poor of Brooklyn.  Exposed to the effects of drug addiction, denial, the frustrations of racial prejudice and oppression, and the challenges of life with the mentally challenged, Theodora might have become cynical and jaded.  However, these experiences affected her in terms of the alleviations of human suffering, and the ways in which she might turn her intelligence and studies into a way to work good and provide relief.

Her work as a court panel psychologist in New York, a member of The Mental Health Professional Panel, is part of this commitment.  The Panel was established to “assure that…parties…have access to qualified mental health professionals.” (courts.state.ny.us)  Adults and/or children may need evaluation in any court case involving “custody and visitation, delinquency, supervisory, child abuse or neglect, termination of parental rights, family offense, or adoption…”  Appointed by the presiding justices of the appellate division, 266 mental health professionals assure that the court has assistance in reaching appropriate decisions.  A two part Fundamental Training Series is required viewing to the practice of forensics as it applies to family law and the litigation involved, for all panel members.  Continuing education programs are also provided through the terms of the panel members.

Dr. Theodora Stolz feels this continuing contribution to the NY justice system is a valuable service to both the courts and the cases which come before them.

Positive and Negative Influences - Dr. Theodora Stolz

Dr. Theodora Stolz’ doctoral thesis, entitled Cognitive Factors in Pathological Gambling, was released during the time of her enrollment at Hofstra University in 1989.  The work explores the causes of, and study of, pathological gambling, and became a source of interest during her marriage to her second husband, who suffered from a compulsive gambling addiction, resulting in the end of that marriage.   Dr. Stolz’ thesis signified a significant addition to the body of academic work on the subject of compulsive gambling, and has been referenced most recently by a study in Las Vegas by the University of Nevada, involving the dissatisfaction of customers in the gaming industry.

Dr. Theodora Stolz’ continued forward motion into her career as an established psychologist has not been without its costs.  As a single mother of 3, Theodora has worried that the cost to her children in her personal attention and involvement has affected their connections in family life.

Other personal challenges include the loss of her father, an important guiding influence in her life.  Theodora’s recollections include her father instilling in her a love of music, resulting in her continued affection for the music and dancing of the Greek culture.  Dancing the ballos, trata, the hasapiko, and cooking traditional Greek dishes like falafel, Easter soup, lemon potatoes with orzo and spanakopita, has enabled Dr. Stolz to remain connected to her Greek roots, and bohemian approach to life.  Theodora also feels her father instilled in her a core of self-esteem and strength.

Source of the Bohemian Philosophy - Dr. Theodora Stolz

Dr. Theodora Stolz thinks of herself as a bohemian-style psychologist, and feels she has been described thusly by others.  Bohemianism can refer to a range of alternative lifestyles, with different tastes in art, literature, fashion and music.  Many non-conformists express their inner selves by living under a different set of rules and values than the majority of society.  Bohemianism may have emerged in France, to describe the increasing concentration of artists and creative spirits in low rent, economically-deprived gypsy neighborhoods.

The term ’gypsy’ had been given to the roving Romanian peoples who were believed to have traveled from Bohemia (Romania), and was associated with free spirits and a lack of respect for marital bonds.  The French opera “Carmen” presented a heroine described as a ‘bohemienne’.  A bohemian in today’s society can be described as an artist or literary figure who leaves, voluntarily or involuntarily, regular convention in his life, or in his art.  This helps describes Theodora Stolz’ outlook on her own principles in life.

Writers especially, came to be enamored of association with the term bohemian, such as Bret Harte of San Francisco who wrote of an idyllic bohemian life.  To be young, to be radical, and to be impoverished, were lifestyles and outlooks most closely associated with bohemianism by the end of the 19th century.  Writer Galet Burgess romanticized the term, saying ‘…in Bohemia one may find almost every sin save Hypocrisy…it is not enough to be oneself in bohemia, one must allow others to be themselves, as well….’

Dr. Theodora Stolz - Military Support

Dr. Theodora Stolz is a psychologist that has supported the military by providing her services over the last twenty five years that she has been in practice. She is based out of the states of New York and New Jersey and is licensed to operate in both. Members of the military endure some of the most psychologically adverse conditions that one can imagine, so her services are welcome. She has donated her time many times over the years and worked with many private clients as well.

Part of her service for the military has been her work on court panels in the state of New Jersey as a forensic psychologist, offering psychological examinations of defendants whose sanity or honesty was in question. Reiki, A Holistic Approach - Dr. Leonora Stolz

Dr. Leonora Stolz is open to the use of alternative forms of treatment like reiki therapy, a Japanese spiritual practice which is regarded as a pseudoscientific alternative medicine.  It is described as a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing.  Developed by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui, it has been called palm healing, or hands on healing, and practitioners believe they are passing on universal energy, or ki, through the palms.  Systemized hand placements are the primary approach of westernized versions of reiki, whereas traditional Buddhist forms of the treatment called for a series of set hand positions.

Reiki made its way to Western culture through the training of Hawayo Takata, an émigré to Hawaii who adjusted traditional reiki to be more understandable to the mentality of the west.  Descriptions of the belief in the practice, are poetic: “…that mysterious vital energy within the mind: one moment it arrives, the next it departs. So fine, there is nothing within it; so vast, there is nothing outside it.  We lose it because of the harm caused by mental agitation…”
It is described as a form of holistic therapy, useful on physical, spiritual, emotional and mental levels. The belief is that energy will flow from the practitioner’s hands, and even that the energy transfer is dependent on intention.

Dr. Theodora Stolz is open, as in all other areas of her practice, to the possibilities of reiki therapy, and to the wants and needs of her patients.
